Basic Visual Editor Chat Transcript

Session Information

  • Date: August 15, 2026
  • Tool: Qoder
  • Model: Undisclosed
  • Project: WITS 2026 SD Project - Turing Machine Simulator
  • Task: Implement visual editor and code editor page with bidirectional sync
  • Tech Stack: SolidJS + Vite + TypeScript
  • User Role: Visual editor and code editor page developer

Initial Requirements

The user requested implementation of:

  1. DiagramView - Interactive canvas for visual TM representation

    • Circles with state names
    • Arrows between states with transition labels
    • Click canvas to create states
    • Draw arrows between states
    • Right-click context menus for editing
    • Touch screen support (double-tap, long-press)
  2. CodeEditor - Text editor for TM DSL code

    • Bidirectional sync with diagram
    • Changes in one reflect immediately in the other
  3. Toolbar - Utility functions

    • Save machine as JSON
    • Export diagram as PNG
  4. Editor Page - Compose all three components

Implementation Phase 1: Initial Setup

Files Created

1. src/store/machineStore.ts

  • Reactive SolidJS store using createStore
  • Holds machine data: states, transitions, alphabets
  • Mutation functions: addState, updateState, removeState, addTransition, updateTransition, removeTransition
  • Sync flag system to prevent infinite loops

2. src/store/codegen.ts

  • Generates DSL code from machine state
  • Converts states and transitions back to text format
  • Initially placed in engine/ but moved to store/ per user request (don't modify engine)

3. src/components/DiagramView.tsx

  • HTML5 Canvas-based rendering
  • State circles with labels
  • Transition arrows with curved paths for multiple transitions
  • Self-loop rendering
  • Hit detection for states and arrows
  • Context menus for editing
  • Touch support with gesture detection

4. src/components/CodeEditor.tsx

  • Textarea for code input
  • Parses code using engine/parser.ts
  • Updates store on code changes
  • Syncs from store to text when diagram changes

5. src/components/Toolbar.tsx

  • Save JSON button
  • Export PNG button
  • Queries canvas element for PNG export

6. src/pages/Editor.tsx

  • Composes DiagramView, CodeEditor, Toolbar
  • Flexbox layout with diagram on left, code on right

7. CSS Files

  • DiagramView.css - Canvas styling, context menus, dialogs
  • CodeEditor.css - Textarea styling, error display
  • Toolbar.css - Toolbar button styling
  • Editor.css - Page layout

Implementation Phase 2: Interaction Model

User Feedback

"if i make changes to the code side the diagram should reflect the change, right now when i try to change the tape values that it reads in the transititon line in the code from the default _ to a 1 or a 0, the transititon line disappears"

Issues Fixed

1. Label-to-ID Mapping

Problem: Parser uses state labels (q0, q1) in transitions, but store uses IDs (0, 1). Transitions couldn't find their states.

Solution: CodeEditor now maps labels to IDs when syncing:

const labelToId = new Map<string, string>();
for (const s of newStates) {
labelToId.set(s.label, s.id);
}
const currId = labelToId.get(t.curr_state);

2. Sync Flag Logic

Problem: Infinite loops between code and diagram updates.

Solution:

  • isCodeUpdate flag prevents regeneration when code changes
  • Set flag before code→store update
  • Effect checks flag, clears it, and skips regeneration
  • Diagram→store updates don't set flag, so code regenerates

Implementation Phase 3: Advanced Interactions

User Request

"there should be a sweet spot in between dragging and drawing the arrow, i should be able to drag around the circle if a quickly start moving it once i click and hold, otherwise i should hold it and the circle should begin to pulse or something to show i am about to make the new transititon"

Implementation

Interaction Modes

  1. Quick drag → Move state
  2. Long press (500ms) → Pulse animation, then drag to create arrow
  3. Right-click → Context menu (mouse only)
  4. Double-tap → Start arrow creation (touch only)
  5. Long-press → Context menu (touch only)

Code Changes

  • Added pendingArrow mode with pulsing visual feedback
  • Timer-based detection of quick drag vs long press
  • Pointer type detection (mouse vs touch)
  • Visual pulse effect using sine wave animation

Implementation Phase 4: Error Handling

User Request

"it must account for mistake in the code, i made a mistake by typing a 1 next to the _, so it looked like _1, this broke it and the line disappeared"

Robust Error Handling

Validation

function isValidTransition(t: any, validStateIds: Set<string>): boolean {
// Check all fields exist and are correct types
// Check input/output are single characters
// Check direction is L or R
// Check state references exist
}

function sanitizeSymbol(s: string): string {
// Ensure single character, default to _ if empty/invalid
}

Error Recovery

  • Invalid transitions silently skipped, valid ones preserved
  • Error messages displayed in code editor header
  • Store maintains last valid state on parse failure
  • Duplicate state labels detected and warned
  • Missing start/accept states warned

Implementation Phase 5: Architecture Refactor

User Request

"C:\Users\Admin\OneDrive\Desktop\WITS\2026\SD Project\PROJECT\shared\tm-editor have a look at this version of the tm, it handles sync perfectly, investigate it, come and incorporate it here"

Key Differences in Shared Version

  1. Source text in store - Not in component
  2. resync() function - Every mutation serializes machine to code
  3. editingLocally flag - Simple boolean with debounce
  4. No separate codegen file - Serialization in parser module
  5. Cleaner sync flow - No complex flag module

Refactored Store

// Source text lives in store
const [source, setSource] = createSignal<string>("");
const [parseError, setParseError] = createSignal<string | null>(null);

// Every mutation calls resync()
function addState(state: State) {
setMachine(produce((m) => { m.states.push(state); }));
resync(); // Automatically updates source text
}

// Code → Store
function updateFromSource(text: string) {
setSource(text);
// Parse and update machine
// On error, leave machine untouched
}

Simplified CodeEditor

// Watch source from store
createEffect(() => {
const latest = source();
if (!editingLocally) setLocalText(latest);
});

// Debounced input handling
function handleInput(value: string) {
editingLocally = true;
setLocalText(value);
debounceHandle = window.setTimeout(() => {
updateFromSource(value);
editingLocally = false;
}, 200);
}

Result: CodeEditor reduced from 230+ lines to ~50 lines. Sync logic centralized in store.

Implementation Phase 6: Multiple Transitions Bug

User Report

"i have three transitions in my code side but only one is being shown in the diagram side"

Root Cause

Parser bug in engine/parser.ts:

// Parser OVERWRITES transitions on each call
} else if (func.toLowerCase() == "maketransitions") {
transitions = makeTransitions(args); // Should append, not overwrite!
}

Workaround (Without Modifying Engine)

Store extracts ALL makeTransitions lines and parses them independently:

// Extract all transition lines from code
const allTransitions: any[] = [];
const lines = text.split(";").map(l => l.trim()).filter(Boolean);
for (const line of lines) {
const match = line.match(/makeTransitions\((.+)\)/i);
if (match && match[1]) {
// Parse each transition manually
const parts = match[1].split(",");
for (const part of parts) {
// Extract: q0/0->q1/0/R
const [curr, next] = part.split("->");
const [q0, s0] = curr.split("/");
const [q1, s1, dir] = next.split("/");
allTransitions.push({ curr_state: q0, input: s0, ... });
}
}
}
tm.transitions = allTransitions; // Override parser's incomplete result

Final Architecture

Data Flow

User types code
→ CodeEditor (debounce 200ms)
→ updateFromSource(text)
→ Parse code
→ Update machine store
→ resync() serializes to code
→ source signal updates
→ DiagramView re-renders

User edits diagram
→ Store mutation (addState, etc.)
→ resync() serializes to code
→ source signal updates
→ CodeEditor effect fires
→ If not editingLocally, update textarea

Key Files

FileResponsibility
store/machineStore.tsCentral state management, parsing, serialization
store/codegen.tsMachine → DSL code generation
components/DiagramView.tsxCanvas rendering, interaction handling
components/CodeEditor.tsxCode input, debounced sync
components/Toolbar.tsxSave/Export utilities
pages/Editor.tsxPage composition

Sync Mechanism

  • Source text in store - Single source of truth
  • resync() after mutations - Automatic code generation
  • editingLocally flag - Prevents overwriting user input
  • 200ms debounce - Smooth typing experience
  • Error preservation - Invalid code doesn't break diagram

Technical Decisions

Why SolidJS?

  • Fine-grained reactivity
  • No virtual DOM overhead
  • Automatic dependency tracking
  • Perfect for bidirectional sync

Why Canvas?

  • Performance for many states/transitions
  • Full control over rendering
  • Easy to implement custom interactions
  • PNG export built-in

Why Store Source Text?

  • Single source of truth
  • Eliminates complex flag logic
  • Cleaner component code
  • Easier to reason about

Why Not Modify Engine?

  • User's responsibility boundary
  • Group project - other members own engine
  • Workarounds in store are isolated
  • Easier to merge later

Known Issues & Workarounds

Parser Overwrites Transitions

Issue: engine/parser.ts overwrites transitions instead of appending
Workaround: Store extracts all transitions manually
Location: store/machineStore.ts lines 77-106

Code Format Changes

Issue: Code regenerates with canonical format, may reformat user input
Impact: Cursor jumps to end, whitespace normalized
Mitigation: Debounce reduces frequency, user can pause editing

Testing Recommendations

  1. Create states - Click on empty canvas
  2. Move states - Quick drag on state
  3. Create arrows - Long press + drag to another state
  4. Edit transitions - Right-click arrow → Edit Transition
  5. Code sync - Type code, watch diagram update
  6. Diagram sync - Drag state, watch code update
  7. Error handling - Type invalid code, verify diagram stays intact
  8. Multiple transitions - Create 3+ transitions, verify all show
  9. Touch support - Test on tablet/phone
  10. Save/Export - Verify JSON and PNG downloads

Future Enhancements

  • Undo/redo functionality
  • Zoom and pan canvas
  • State selection and multi-select
  • Copy/paste states and transitions
  • Auto-layout algorithm
  • Transition animation during simulation
  • Code autocomplete
  • Syntax highlighting
  • Import machine from JSON
  • Multi-tape visualization
  • Simulation controls (step, run, reset)

Conclusion

Successfully implemented a fully functional visual TM editor with:

  • Bidirectional sync between code and diagram
  • Robust error handling
  • Intuitive interactions (mouse + touch)
  • Clean architecture based on shared version
  • Workarounds for parser limitations

All requirements met. Ready for user testing and iteration.
