  • Tool: Qoder
  • Model: Qwen3.7-Plus
  • Project: WITS 2026 SD Project - Turing Machine Simulator
  • Task: State position persistence, self-loop arrows, context menus, retro styling, simulation highlighting
  • Tech Stack: SolidJS + Vite + TypeScript
  • User Role: Visual editor and code editor page developer

Job 1: State Position Persistence Fix

User Prompt

save a transcript of this chat in the project root. a concern i have is that when a file is saved, you exit the current machine and come back , the x and y coordinates of the states is not saved and it goes to a default shape. look at diagram view, see why maybe? tell me before you fix it

Response

Investigated the full save/load flow across Editor.tsx, machineStore.ts, codegen.ts, and parser.ts. Found that deserializeMachine() used a lossy roundtrip: generate code text (no positions) -> parse code back (positions default to 0,0) -> patch positions from saved JSON. The updateFromSource function was designed for live code editing, not file loading. Proposed fix: have deserializeMachine set the store directly from saved JSON data instead of going through the code generation/parsing roundtrip.

User Prompt

so which file needs to be fixed right now?

Response

Editor.tsx -- specifically the deserializeMachine function. It needs to set the store directly from the saved JSON (preserving x,y atomically) instead of generating code text and parsing it back. May also need to export a new loader from machineStore.ts.

User Prompt

shoot

Response

Applied the fix:

  • src/store/machineStore.ts -- Added loadMachine() function that sets the store atomically from saved JSON, preserving positions directly.
  • src/components/Editor.tsx -- Rewrote deserializeMachine() to call loadMachine(data) directly. Removed unused imports (applyStatePositions, generateCode).

Job 2: Self-Loop Arrow Creation

User Prompt

right now in the functionality of the diagramview, there is no way to draw an arrow from one state to itself, any suggestions for this?

Response

The rendering for self-loops already existed in DiagramView (lines 395-411). The blocker was the creation logic: if (hitState && hitState.id !== arrowSourceStateId) explicitly rejected self-loops. Suggested three approaches: (1) context menu option, (2) Shift+drag back to same state, (3) both. Recommended option 3.

User Prompt

okay do both of those, for the current context menu, thers a useless button, move state, remove that and replace it with this new one

Response

Applied all changes in DiagramView.tsx:

  • Removed movingStateId, "movingState" interaction mode, and handleMoveState
  • Added handleCreateSelfLoop handler (with duplicate check)
  • Replaced "Move State" context menu item with "Create Self-Loop"
  • Added shiftHeld variable with keydown/keyup listeners
  • Relaxed the arrow creation guard to allow self-loops when shift is held or on touch

Job 3: Context Menu Dismissal and Browser Context Menu Blocking

User Prompt

when anycontext menu is open (for state or transition), if i click somewhere on the canvas, it should close the menu, also the modal that appears when i click the edit transition, style that modal more with the game like styling as the home screen, style the context menus a little more too.

User Prompt (follow-up)

when i right click it brings up the menu of microsoft edge, it must only bring up the context menu of the editor. also if i click somewhere on the canvas while the context menu is open in order to close it, it must only close the menu, not add a state.

Response

Applied all fixes in DiagramView.tsx:

  1. Browser context menu blocked -- Added onContextMenu={handleContextMenu} to the container div so e.preventDefault() fires everywhere.
  2. Click-to-dismiss without side effects -- When the context menu is open, handlePointerDown closes the menu, sets a dismissedMenu flag, and returns early. handlePointerUp checks the flag and also returns early, preventing state creation.
  3. Retro styling -- Context menus, rename modal, and edit transition modal all restyled with parchment backgrounds, dark brown borders, "Press Start 2P" font, pixel box-shadows, and retro buttons matching the home screen aesthetic.

Job 4: Retro/Game-Like Styling for Toolbar and Transition Panel

User Prompt

appropriately style the transition panel and the toolbar.

Response

Full rewrites of both components:

  • src/components/Toolbar.tsx -- Background changed to parchment --frame-bg, 4px dark brown bottom border. Buttons use pixel-btn style with retro colors (green play, yellow step, blue reset). Labels uppercase ("INPUT", "SPD"). Save shows "SAVE"/"SAVED". Camera toggle shows "CAM ON"/"CAM OFF". Export buttons shortened to "JSON"/"PNG".
  • src/components/TransitionPanel.tsx -- Cream --panel-bg with 4px dark brown border, dark title bar reading "TRANSITIONS", retro-styled form inputs with 3px borders and pixel font, pixel-style ADD/UPDATE and CANCEL buttons. Transition list uses retro font with subtle separators and red delete button.

User Prompt

increase the size of the text in the context menus

Response

Increased all context menu item font sizes from 8px to 10px in DiagramView.tsx.

Job 5: Sequential Simulation Highlighting

User Prompt

when the highlighting animation plays in the diagramview, we see the arrow and the next state highlighted at the same time, i think arrows and states should be highlighted individually with each step, could this adjustment be made?

Response

Initially implemented a two-phase system where the arrow highlights first, then after a delay the state highlights (both visible in sequence but with overlap). Modified handleStep and tick in Editor.tsx.

User Prompt

the arrow musnt "flash first" it must be only the arrow hightlighted, then only the state highlighted, the steps should work like that

Response

Changed to exclusive phases: arrow only first (state cleared), then state only (arrow cleared). No overlap. In step mode the arrow shows for 400ms then switches. In play mode the interval is split in half.

User Prompt

it musnt show for 400ms, for one of the "steps" only an arrow should be lit up, like that is actually one of the steps.

Response

Reworked to a proper two-phase step system. Each click of Step advances by one phase only:

  • Click 1: only the arrow lights up (this IS one step)
  • Click 2: only the state lights up (this IS the next step)
  • Click 3: next arrow, etc.

Added stepPhase variable alternating between "arrow" and "state". In play mode, each tick alternates phases.

User Prompt

right now, when the arrow is highlighted, the next state is highlighted with it, that is the only problem, you did the rest of what i asked properly

Response

Found the root cause: DiagramView received currentStateId={config()?.stateId}, so when setConfig(next) was called during the arrow phase, the next state got highlighted through the config. Fixed by changing to currentStateId={activeStateId()} so the diagram highlight is controlled solely by the explicit highlight signal.

User Prompt

perfect.

Response

Glad it's working as expected.

Job 6: Chat Transcript

User Prompt

add the rest of this chat to the chat transcript, include the model and the jobs it has completed

User Prompt (follow-up)

you should say it was qwen3.7 plus, not just qoder.... also include my prompts and your responses in this file

Response

Rewrote the full transcript with model name "Qwen 3.7 Plus", all 6 jobs documented with user prompts and responses, and files modified for each task.
