Session Information

  • Date: August 2026
  • Tool: Qoder
  • Model: Undisclosed
  • Project: WITS 2026 SD Project - Turing Machine Simulator
  • Task: Editor responsiveness, debugger controls, draggable modals, resizable split pane, retro styling
  • Tech Stack: SolidJS + Vite + TypeScript
  • User Role: Visual editor and code editor page developer

Job 1: Fix Unresponsive Editor and Test Case Add Button

User Prompt

nothing in the entire editor is responsive, this is the only error in the console get-source-map.js:1 Uncaught (in promise) SyntaxError: The requested module '/node_modules/source-map-js/source-map.js?v=62685399' does not provide an export named 'SourceMapConsumer'

Response

The unresponsiveness was caused by the TestModal wrapper div having position: fixed covering the entire screen with z-index: 300 and pointer-events: auto -- even when the modal was closed, it was an invisible layer blocking all clicks. Fixed by conditionally rendering the wrapper only when modalOpen() or modalSlid() is true. The SourceMapConsumer error is a separate Vite dev server quirk and does not affect runtime.

User Prompt

inputting test cases in the modal doesnt work? add button isnt functional, inspect please

Response

The createEffect in TestModal read both props.testCases AND cases() (the local signal). When addCase updated cases(), the effect re-ran, saw local and parent were out of sync, and overwrote local state back to the parent -- wiping out the newly added case. Fixed by introducing a prevParentLen signal so the effect only depends on props.testCases.length and never reads cases(), preventing the sync-back loop.

Job 2: Debugger Controls in Results Modal

User Prompt

in i/o testing, the step and reset button dont make sense in the tool bar, do you agree?

Response

Agreed. Step, Reset and Speed slider are single-input debugging controls that don't apply to batch testing. They should be hidden when in I/O testing mode.

User Prompt

yeah remove them from the toolbar. i want you to add those debugging controls into the results modal though next to each test case, so i press the run/debug button and the modal moves to the side, it should be centred over the right half of the screen. the controls appear, i can press play, while it is playing you can pause it, you can step through it, change the speed, and then a button to close the debugging and go the modal moves back to the middle, hows that

Response

Implemented the full debug flow:

  • Toolbar.tsx -- Hid Step, Reset and Speed slider when testMode is true.
  • TestModal.tsx -- Added debugging props (playing, paused, speed, onPlay, onPause, onStep, onSpeedChange, onStartDebug, onEndDebug, dynamicMode, onDynamicToggle). Added per-case DEBUG button and inline debug control bar (Play/Pause, Step, Speed, CAM, CLOSE).
  • Editor.tsx -- Added debugging signal plus handleStartDebug(tc) and handleEndDebug(), wired all debug props through to TestModal.

Job 3: Fix Debugger Play and LED Logic

User Prompt

so the play button in the debugger doesnt play the animation

Response

handleStartDebug set paused=true but never computed playConfigs. When play called handlePlay -> tick(), playConfigs was empty so nothing happened. Fixed by running run() in handleStartDebug to pre-compute all configurations and populate playConfigs and playIndex.

User Prompt

if i input a test case and i say i expect it to reject, there should be a green led next to the reject state not the accept state. check that logic please and refine it

Response

The computeTestLeds function always placed green LEDs on the accept state for passing tests, regardless of expected outcome. Fixed by always using haltedStateId for both pass and fail LEDs -- the state where the machine actually stopped. Now: expected "reject" + passes = green LED on the halt state; expected "accept" + passes = green LED on accept state.

Job 4: Fix DEBUGGING Button Text

User Prompt

when i have multiple tests in my results modal, if i click on one of them the debugger controls appear and it says debugging on the button. then when i press close it goes back to the results, thats fine. now when i pick a different test case and click debug, the previous test case i was looking at, that button still says debugging, it doesnt update to the new one. please check this logic and refine it.

Response

The button text condition checked result.testCase.id === props.testResults?.find(r => !r.passed)?.testCase.id -- always matching the first failed test case, not the one being debugged. Fixed by adding a debuggingTestCaseId signal in Editor.tsx, set in handleStartDebug and cleared in handleEndDebug. The button text now compares against the actual test case being debugged.

Job 5: Restyle Panel Toggle Tabs

User Prompt

in the editor, the buttons to switch between code and the transition panel, style those appropriately

Response

Rewrote the tabs in CodeEditor.tsx from generic modern Tailwind (blue/grey) to the retro theme: "Press Start 2P" font at 10px, uppercase labels (CODE / TRANSITIONS), --frame-bg tab bar with --dark-border borders, active tab uses --panel-bg with no bottom border so it merges with the content area, inactive tab stays transparent with muted grey text.

User Prompt

make the font bigger for those buttons

Response

Increased tab button font size from 8px to 10px.

Job 6: Convert Modals to Draggable Floating Windows

User Prompt

okay so what i want is, when the modal appears it must be movable like a window in windows if you know what i mean, it shouldnt be fixed, it doesnt need that shadow background, it should have a higher z index. i should be able to reposition it and still make edits on like the canvas and code editor/transition panel. do you get what i mean?

Response

Converted TestModal into a draggable floating window:

  • Removed the backdrop overlay entirely.
  • Panel is position: fixed with z-index: 1000.
  • Title bar is the drag handle with cursor: grab.
  • Close button (x) excluded from dragging via data-close-btn attribute.
  • Editor wrapper div simplified -- no more transforms or pointer-events logic.

User Prompt

the modal isnt moving when i drag it

Response

SolidJS does not re-evaluate inline style objects when signals change -- they are computed once at creation time. Rewrote to use a ref on the panel element and direct DOM manipulation (panelEl.style.left/top) during drag. Modal starts centered via CSS left: 50%; top: 50%; transform: translate(-50%, -50%), then on first drag getBoundingClientRect() reads the actual position and explicit pixel values take over.

User Prompt

when i right click on a transition on the canvas a context menu pops up and an option to edit it, when i click edit a modal pops up, make that modal draggable as well

Response

Applied the same draggable window pattern to both the Edit Transition and Rename State modals in DiagramView.tsx. Added a shared setupDrag helper function. Both modals now have no backdrop, are positioned fixed at z-index 1000, draggable by the title bar, and have a close (x) button.

Job 7: Reset Button, Close Button Size, and Grab Cursor

User Prompt

nice, add the reset button to the debugger controls as well. increase the size of the x to close the modal a little bit, instead of the four arrows pointing in different directions, use the grabbing hand for dragging the modal.

Response

Three changes across TestModal.tsx and DiagramView.tsx:

  1. Reset button -- Added blue reset button (circular arrow icon) between Step and Speed in debug controls. Added onReset prop to TestModal, wired from Editor's handleReset.
  2. Close button size -- Increased x button font-size from 14px to 20px on all three modals.
  3. Grab cursor -- Changed cursor: "move" to cursor: "grab" on all title bars. Added cursor: "grabbing" during active drag via direct DOM manipulation.

User Prompt

the grab cursor when i drag the title is fine, but now theres an open hand cursor on the modal, it should just be the normal cursor. grab for drag, pointer finger for buttons, otherwise normal

Response

The cursor: "grab" on the title bar was cascading to child elements via CSS inheritance. Fixed by adding cursor: "default" to the body content area of all three modals, preventing the grab cursor from bleeding into inputs, buttons and text.

Job 8: Remove Redundant Toolbar Controls in I/O Mode

User Prompt

in i/o mode you can remove the cam button from the toolbar to reduce redundancy

Response

Wrapped the CAM button in {!props.testMode && (...)} so it is hidden in I/O testing mode. It remains available inside the debugger controls in the modal.

User Prompt

theres like a dropdown arrow next to single input and i/o testing, but its not an actual dropdown, its more of a switch, add something more appropriate there or remove it

Response

Replaced the misleading dropdown arrow (down-pointing triangle) with a toggle arrow (left-right arrows) that better represents the switch behavior. Also removed the unnecessary wrapper div around the button.

Job 9: Resizable Split Pane

User Prompt

in the editor make the code/transition panels section resizable, that means the canvas is also resizeable, just along that edge, make it work like a window in windows, just hover and drag to resize, set a max and min size on the panel.

Response

Added a draggable resize divider between the diagram canvas and code/transition panel in Editor.tsx:

  • 6px dark brown divider bar with cursor: col-resize.
  • Highlights blue on hover for visual feedback.
  • Drag left/right to resize -- canvas expands/shrinks as the right panel resizes.
  • Min width: 250px, Max width: 800px on the right panel.
  • Direct DOM manipulation during drag (no re-renders) for smooth performance.
  • Body cursor locked to col-resize and text selection disabled during drag, restored on mouse up.
  • Left panel uses flex-1 to fill remaining space automatically.
